Reiki Benefits and FAQ

Reiki is a Japanese healing modality that involves a process of “laying of hands” over the person receiving the treatment to help increase physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The traditional origin story states that it was pioneered by Mikao Usui who had a spiritual experience after fasting in the mountains of Japan. He received a unique type of spiritual enlightenment and realized that he was able to channel healing energy from his hands. Reiki has developed since it’s origin in the early 1920s and now includes many other subset modalities such as Kundalini Reiki, Holy Fire & Karuna Reiki, and more.

Reiki is truly such a comprehensive healing modality to treat the mind, body, and spirit. It would be a bit of a disservice to the potential of Reiki to try to make an all-encompassing list of it’s benefits, because we would be sure to leave some out. Reiki has the potential to help us empower & heal virtually every area of our life as long as we have the correct intention and focus behind the treatment session.

Here are just a few of the potential benefits*:

  • Promotes Relaxation

  • Alignment of the Chakras or energy centers within the body.

  • Increase in positive feelings like happiness, comfort, and peacefulness.

  • Decrease in physical pain, even chronic pain. This additionally makes it an excellent complementary therapy for those undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or other medical treatments**.

  • Decreased symptoms of Anxiety and Depression, even postpartum. Seriously. If you know a new mom, please consider gifting her a session.

  • Better sense of clarity within one’s life about one’s purpose.

  • Deeper sense of connectedness with one’s Spirit Guides, God, Source Energy, and even Departed Loved Ones.

… and so much more.

So what happens during a Reiki session?

Every practitioner has a different method for how they go about a session. Here’s what a session looks like with me:

First I welcome my clients and have them sign a waiver, and fill out a questionnaire asking them if they’d like to have a quiet session, or a talking session, and if they’re okay being touched or if they would prefer for my hands to hover approximately 1-2 inches above their body for treatment. I also ask how their stress levels are, and if there’s any health conditions (such as having a pacemaker) that I should know about.

Then I have my client lay fully clothed on my massage table, making sure they are comfortable for the entirety of the session.

I will then set intentions for the sessions, say a quick prayer, and get started placing my hands above or on top of various energetic points starting at the head and working down to the feet.

Depending on the client and what they have going on in their lives when they come to me, some people fall asleep on the table, and some stay awake and chat the whole time! It varies greatly from one session to the next, and truly people tend to get what they need from the sessions.

Again, each practitioner varies greatly in their techniques. But some (myself included) may incorporate other supplemental modalities into your session as well. Things like Sound Healing using crystal singing bowls and tuning forks, Crystal healing, Aromatherapy, and Frequency Support are all things that I incorporate into each of my healing sessions.

When the session is over, I give my clients a few moments to process anything that has taken place before we grab a drink of water and head out. Sometimes folks have questions for me during this time about what they’ve experienced during the session, because peoples experiences vary greatly as well. Some people find themselves experiencing vivid colors or images when their eyes are closed, some report a sense of chills, or heat flowing through their body, and some simply find themselves to be deeply relaxed.

There is no set guideline on how often a person should receive Reiki Treatments, however as a loose framework, once per month tends to work out pretty well for most. If you’re experiencing a time of heightened stress, or working through physical recovery or treatment of any kind, you may need to come more often. And it’s also fine to simply come on an as-needed basis! If you’re not sure about what type of follow-up will suit you best, your practitioner will be able to help guide you.

When your session is complete, it’s important to drink lots of water and give your body rest and good nutritious food. Especially after your very first session, it’s normal to feel a little depleted afterward. This is because you most likely had a lot of energy that was ready to be released! Please treat yourself with care and compassion as you recuperate, and remember that over time this will get better and you will feel more and more energized and aligned.

The real magic tends to happen in your life after your sessions. I have heard stories of people getting promotions, experiencing radical or rapid physical healing, better sleep, better relationships, and so so so much more.
