How to Smudge Your Home Properly and Effectively

I recently had a client come to me and ask why she wasn't getting the results she desired when she would Smudge her home with Sage. I've heard the question before, so I decided it would be a good time to go over some basics of How, Why, and When to Smudge your home!

First, I think it's appropriate to discuss what a "Smudge" really entails, and why it's useful. For us Highly Sensitive People and Empaths, it's important to have a cleansing routine on standby for our personal energetic field and home. The basic idea behind a "Sage Smudge" is to light a bundle of dried White Sage until it smokes, and let the smoke cleanse the energy of the space you're in.

Whether you've accidentally absorbed some negative, or lower-vibrational energies throughout your day, or you feel your home is holding onto some, Sage Smudging is an effective method to detox that energy and invite Peace, Love, and Light to enter! Let's say, for example, you have a family member who is particularly draining to you. Maybe they're physically or mentally ill, and you're so highly Empathetic that you can't help but absorb some of their energy when you're around them. You begin to notice that even after they leave your home, you remain sluggish, depressed, on-edge, etc. This would be a great time to break out the Sage!

Another, very popular use for Sage is to cleanse your home or space from the presence of an unwanted Spirit. Sometimes those who depart from this earth, pass in a way that is so quick or abrupt that they don't even know they're departed! It happens more frequently than you would think! Another common culprit happens when the departed person isn't ready or wiling to move onto the next energetic state, so they decide to stay in the home or space that they feel more comfortable. Because these Spirits carry a lower vibration than those that have accepted their departure, it's easier for us humans to hear them! (I'll talk more about that in another post). More often than not, these Spirits don't mean to scare us or cause any harm. Even so, your space is your own! And you should always be in charge of the energy that comes and goes in order to keep yourself in balance. So, again, we have Sage to aid us in this process!

For those of us Highly Sensitive People who work in a field that involves contact with the public, even if it's not Energy or Spirit-based work, it's never a bad idea to occasionally Sage your home just as a basic cleaning ritual! Personally, I Sage my home every time there's a new moon, which is about once a month. As someone who works in the Spirit-realm frequently, it's really important that I make it a practice. My 1 1/2 year old daughter even helps me with it!

Regardless of why you choose to Smudge your home, the tools used in the process will remain the same. The only two things you absolutely need to properly Sage Smudge your home include a bundle of dried White Sage, and a flame! That's it! If you have a green thumb, you could even grow your own at home and have a steady stock of it! There are shops all around the country that sell Sage Smudge bundles, and you can even find them on Amazon if you prefer to shop online. Many places will even offer a Smudging Kit! These are wonderful and frequently come with an Abalone Shell to catch the ashes, and a feather to help waft the smoke. The Shell and Feather aren't necessary to Sage your home but if you're a person who likes to honor traditional rituals and ceremonies, go for it! But if you're in a pinch and only have the Sage on hand, you're still good to go!

The process for Smudging will start in the point in your home or space furthest from the front door. You will move one room at a time toward the front door of your house or space. You should first open a window in whatever room you're in (if you don't have a window in this room, you will want to start in the back of the room and move toward the door, then move toward the closest window in your house) and then light the Sage. I prefer to carry a small lit candle with me rather than a lighter or matches. The Sage will begin to release a very fragrant smoke into the room you're in. You will walk around each room wafting the smoke toward the open window and letting the smoke rise to the ceiling in every corner. You can use a feather to waft the smoke if you have one, or you can let it drift on it's own. A feather does speed up the process, I must say, but again it's not a requirement. You should line every wall (every 90 degree angle) with the smoke. As you're moving through each room, it's extremely important to focus on your intention for the cleanse. This is the thing people miss the most! It's not enough to light some sage and walk around your house, you have to deliberately and willfully ask the negativity/energy presence to leave, and set the intention that only love and light may remain! Claim your space as your own!

When you reach the final room in your house, open the front door and leave it open for a minute or two to let any remaining energy clear out (and it will help to diminish the smoke if it bothers you). Now you can take a deep breath and relax! You're all finished! Depending on the strength of the energy you just cleared out (if you were Saging out a Spirit who has been there for a long time, their energy will be stronger) it may take a day or two for the residual energy to diminish. Energy leaves a footprint, just like we do when we walk in the sand! However, if you don't see your desired results in a few days, it's certainly time to do it again, and make sure you're really focusing as you're doing it. Again, that is the most common reason it wouldn't work.
